The Most Relaxing Photo Gift: Custom Paint-by-Number
The Gift My Sister Found for My College Kid (And Now I Want to Make One for Everyone)
Last fall, my sister was on a mission: find a genuinely great gift for my college-age daughter.
Not a “here’s a gift card because I panicked” gift. Not a “this will definitely end up under the bed in the dorm” gift.
A real gift.
And she stumbled on something I didn’t even know existed: a custom paint-by-number canvas made from one of your own photos.
We’ve had plenty of success with regular paint-by-number kits over the years — both my girls (now 20 and 16) genuinely enjoy them. They’re calming, low-stakes, kind of hypnotic in the best way. A little meditative project you can do while a show is on, or when you want to be off your phone for once.
But the idea of making one from a photo you upload?
Now that was cool.
Why Paint-by-Number Works So Well for Teens + College Kids
If you have a teen or college kid in your life, you already know the sweet spot is:
something fun but not childish
something creative but not intimidating
something that helps them decompress
something they can actually do in a dorm / bedroom without needing a whole crafting studio
Paint-by-number hits all of that. It’s structured (so you don’t have to “be artistic”), but you still get the satisfaction of making something with your hands.
And when it’s customized from a photo that means something to them? It goes from “activity” to “keepsake.”
Choosing the Photo: One Rule — Pick Something They Love
Before my sister ordered, she texted me to ask what photo I thought Annie would actually enjoy painting.
Because there’s “this is a nice photo” … and then there’s “this is a photo I would happily stare at for 8 hours while I paint tiny sections of it.”
So I went digging through my photos and found the perfect one:
Annie’s beloved kitty, TacoCat, sitting in our kitchen window… surrounded by plants… in pretty light.
It was calm. Familiar. Cozy. Very her.
Also: cats and plants ended up being a weirdly perfect paint-by-number subjects. Strong shape. Good contrast. Plenty of little areas to paint without it becoming an impossible landscape masterpiece.
How the Custom Paint-by-Number Ordering Works (According to My Sister’s Very Helpful Text)
When she placed the order, my sister sent me a message with the exact details — and I’m including it here because this is the kind of information I always want when I’m buying something new online:
“Here’s the one I ordered*. You can pick how detailed you want it to be (how many colors) and other customizable parts. I did the raw image (you can pay extra to have it ‘enhanced’ but I trust the photographer here), 36 colors (basic is 24, this is the middle one — could have gone up to 48 but that seemed a little excessive). It’s just 12x12 since I figured she wouldn’t want it to take up a whole dorm room wall. Just the painting was $46.63.”
This is the part I love: you get to choose the level of detail. More colors usually means a more nuanced final look… but also more tiny sections.
We chose the middle option because it felt like the sweet spot:
detailed enough to be beautiful, not so detailed that it becomes a second job.
And the 12x12 size was perfect for a dorm — substantial, but not “I guess this is now the focal point of the entire room.”

Shipping Timeline: Not Overnight, But Worth It
This is not an “order Tuesday, paint on Friday” kind of situation.
I remember it taking about 3 weeks to a month to arrive from when she ordered it. Which honestly makes sense — it’s custom, and it’s being produced and shipped like a personalized product, not pulled off a warehouse shelf.
So if you’re thinking holiday gift, birthday gift, end-of-year teacher gift, etc… order early.
(Or do what I do and order it, then immediately forget you ordered it, then get delighted when it shows up like a present you bought yourself.)
What Made This Such a Win as a Photo-Based Gift
I’m a photographer, so yes — I’m biased toward photo gifts.
But this one is extra good because it’s not just “here’s a photo on a thing.”
It’s:
a photo they love
turned into an experience
that they get to spend time with
and then end up with a finished piece they made themselves
It’s personal without being cheesy. It’s creative without being stressful. And it has this sneaky bonus effect where it slows time down a little.
Which — if you have older kids — you know is basically priceless.
If You’re Thinking of Ordering a Custom Paint-by-Number From Your Own Photo…
Here’s what I’d suggest:
Pick a photo with:
one clear subject (pet, person, a simple scene)
good light (window light is amazing)
not too much chaotic background detail
Choose your detail level thoughtfully:
24 colors = simpler, faster, more “graphic” looking
36 colors = the sweet spot (what we did)
48 colors = very detailed, very time-consuming, could be gorgeous but commit accordingly
Size matters:
If it’s for a dorm, bedroom, apartment, or small space, 12x12 is perfect.
Ooh, also, this thing's awesome.
Highly recommend grabbing something like this, too, if you get into painting projects... my fabulous sister also found us this paintbrush washer thing, and it's constantly in use.
